Early Beatles Photographer: Astrid Kirchherr

Astrid Kirchherr was born in Hamburg, Germany.

In 1960, Astrid met The Beatles when they first toured Hamburg. She began taking photographs of her new friends from this then unknown band. In these early days Stu Sutcliffe & Pete Best were part of the band with Ringo still not featuring in the band. Stu Sutcliffe ended up leaving the band to follow his dream of becoming an artist after falling in love with Astrid.

In 1964, Astrid Kirchherr worked with Max Scheler and went onto photograph The Beatles at the filming of “A Hard Day’s Night” for STERN magazine. They took some of the best “behind the scenes” photo’s of The Beatles ever captured. The movie BACKBEAT (England 1994), was based on Stu Sutcliffe & Astrid’s life in Hamburg which helped creat a new interest for her amazing photos of the world’s most famous band- when they were just another band historical photos.
