Hand- Painted Limited
Editions
The Ink and Paint department at Disney Studios was in
charge for the painting and inking of all animated shorts
and full length feature films. This begun with such
classics as Steamboat Willie and Silly
Symphonies right through to modern master pieces as
such The Little Mermaid. Today however the Ink and
Paint department is solely involved in the creation of
exquisite limited edition artwork. There are three
varieties of limited editions; Hand- inked, hand- painted
limited editions; Xerographic- line, hand- painted; and
Sericel limited editions. |

Inked limited edition cels
Up until 1961 with the production of 101
Dalmations, cels were hand inked
as well as
being hand- painted. However from that year on, Ub Iwerks
and
the Xerox Corporation began using a mechanical
technique to transfer
the line work from drawings onto
cels, thus bypassing the need for
hand- inking. Yet at
the Ink and Paint Department of Disney a dedicated
team
still use the techniques of yesteryear by Hand-inking a
small
selection of Limited Edition cels. Some of these
stunning pieces of art
